JUHA-MATTI HAUTANIEMI
Finnish Sisu. 11 × Ironman. One Goal: SUB 10.
I’m Juha-Matti Hautaniemi, a Finnish triathlete and an 11-time Ironman finisher.
My triathlon journey began in 2014. Since then, swimming, cycling and running have become an important part of my life – sometimes more, sometimes less, but always there.
So far, I have completed 11 full-distance Ironman races and around ten half-distance races. My personal best for the full Ironman distance is 11 hours 6 minutes, and my half-distance personal best is 4 hours 49 minutes.
But this story is not really about finishing times.
It is about how far an ordinary Finnish man can go when determination, curiosity, hard work and Finnish sisu come together.
Finnish Sisu
There is no perfect English translation for the Finnish word sisu.
To me, sisu means continuing when things get difficult. You don’t have to make a big noise about what you are doing, and every day doesn’t have to be perfect. You simply do what you can today – and continue again tomorrow.
Ironman fits that mindset perfectly.
3.8 kilometres of swimming.
180 kilometres of cycling.
42.2 kilometres of running.
You don’t reach the finish line because of one great training session. You get there through thousands of small decisions made consistently over months and years.
When Your Body Sets Its Own Limits
My journey has not always been straightforward.
I live with psoriasis, and especially psoriatic arthritis, which brings its own challenges to endurance sports. Because of this, my training is a constant balancing act between training load, recovery and listening to my body.
For me, sisu does not mean ignoring what your body is telling you and simply pushing through at any cost.
Sometimes sisu also means having the patience to stop.
Over the years, I have had to learn when to train hard, when to back off and when to simply wait. In a long-term project, the goal is not to win a single training session.
The goal is to be able to keep training year after year.
11 Ironmans – And I’m Not Finished Yet
After completing 11 Ironmans, I could easily think that I have already achieved everything I originally wanted from triathlon.
I don’t.
There is still one big goal ahead of me:
A sub-10-hour Ironman.
My current personal best is 11:06. Over the next three years, my goal is to take more than an hour off that time and discover how close I can get to my true potential.
SUB 10 will not come easily.
It will require better swimming, more efficient cycling, a strong marathon, smart race nutrition, proper recovery and, above all, consistent years of healthy training.
And probably quite a lot of Finnish sisu.
TriathlonRehearsal – Experience From Real Life
TriathlonRehearsal.com is built around a simple idea: you don’t have to learn everything the hard way.
Since 2014, I have trained, raced, made mistakes, succeeded, failed, learned and started again.
Now I want to share that experience with other triathletes.
I don’t promise shortcuts to becoming an Ironman.
I don’t believe in perfect training weeks either, or in the idea that an ordinary person should build their entire life around triathlon.
I believe in smart planning, consistency and training that fits into real life.
Because in the end, becoming a better endurance athlete is not about one perfect day.
It is about showing up again tomorrow.
